INDICATIONS: Hoodia Gordonii is a spiny, succulent plant that closely resembles a cactus, but actually belongs to the genus Apocynaceae, commonly known as the dog-bane or milkweed family. Of the 13 species belonging to this genus, Hoodia is the only member that has appetite controlling properties. Hoodia is native in the deserts of South Africa and has been used for centuries by Sans tribesmen to ward off hunger and thirst on extended hunting trips. For this reason, Hoodia has gained the attention of the pharmaceutical industry for weight loss.
Scientific studies have credited a steroidal glycoside termed P57AS3 (P57) as being the active compound in Hoodia that gives the plant its appetite suppressing abilities. Scientists report that P57 mimics the effects of glucose on nerve cells in the brain. Specifically, the glycoside increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the nerve cells in the hypothalamus, the control center of the brain that regulates thirst, appetite and temperature. When ATP levels increase, the nerve cells signal to the hypothalamus that the body is full and satiated. A study conducted at the Hallett Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Brown Medical School demonstrated that P57 raised ATP content in the hypothalamic neurons by 50-150% and decreased 24-hour food intake by 40-60%. The pharmaceutical industry abandoned Hoodia as a new item when they discovered it was not feasible to synthetically manufacture P57. They also discovered that there was not enough wild Hoodia in the world and that it did not grow fast enough under cultivation to suit their quantity demands. This is when the supplement industry began to market and educate on the benefits of Hoodia as a whole herb.
Consumers should use caution when purchasing products that claim to be true Hoodia Gordonii. Several Hoodia products on the market are made of cactus-like material and contain no P57 or any other active appetite suppressing substance. The 20:1 claims that many companies use for their Hoodia products are false. These products are not concentrated extracts. Their claim of 20:1 is a fresh to dry down ratio of raw material. Their 20:1 claims are just dry raw material. Additionally, many 20:1 Hoodia claims are actually adulterated material with prickly pear cactus, maltodextrin and sand. Many fail independent lab tests. Consumers should demand to see 3rd party authentic test results on the current lot numbered batch. Authentic Hoodia must also be accompanied by an international CITES certificate for validation. Since Hoodia is endangered, the South African government carefully allows only a small amount of Hoodia to be harvested in order to protect it. The CITES certificate with a current date shows that the batch is authentic and not an illegally harvested batch. Consumers should insist on seeing this document which responsible manufacturers will always have and gladly show.
Hoodia is by no means a cure for obesity, but it can be a helpful supplement obese or overweight individuals can use in conjunction with diet and exercise to achieve and maintain weight loss. It is most helpful for those who experience excessive food cravings and have difficulties controlling appetite and portion control. Due to P57’s ability to naturally raise ATP energy, Hoodia can also be helpful for dieter’s who feel weak and lethargic when consuming fewer calories. This is why it was also used as an energy herb for strenuous exertion
